When our specimen, let us call him John Doe, got his high school entrance exam report back at PR90, meaning he outscored 90% of the entire nation, there were no celebrations. In almost any other country, that is an honors student. In a Taiwanese house, it was a felony. Do you not find it absolutely crazy that by this metric, 99 percent of the students are expected to just declare themselves complete failures?
The prescribed treatment for this criminal offense was a private high school meticulously designed to mentally, and arguably physically, quarantine the defect out of him. The rehabilitation process started slowly, exactly like boiling a frog.
The first year introduced the 5:50 AM alarm. John would drag his lifeless body onto the school bus in the dark, process standardized information all day, and get dumped back home at 6 PM. Social life was a myth. Outside of a stray after school club, his existence was entirely institutionalized.
By the second year, the school turned the heat up to a rolling boil. The 5:50 AM wake up call remained, but now he was detained at the facility until 9 PM, dragging himself through the front door around 10 PM. Saturdays were no longer his; he was back in the school's prison cell by 7 AM (which means waking up at 6), staring at the chalkboard until 4 PM just to "study." Sundays? Remanded to cram schools and STEM correctional programs. Quick show of hands. How many grown adults do you know who could survive an eighty hour work week without crying in the corporate bathroom? If you did this to a thirty year old tech worker today, HR would have a meltdown. But for a teenager? That is just called building character.
By senior year, the frog was fully cooked. Every single day, Monday through Friday, ended at 10 PM. John became a nocturnal creature trapped in a fluorescent box. He left the house when it was pitch black. He returned when it was pitch black. He went months feeling like he never actually saw the sun, spending entire days achieving absolutely nothing but the illusion of productivity. Seriously, take a second and calculate the Vitamin D deficiency here. Even maximum security inmates are legally guaranteed an hour in the yard. Makes you wonder who the real prisoners were, right? Physical health was not just ignored; it was treated as a superficial distraction. You do not need a functioning pulse to fill in a Scantron bubble.
But the true psychological warfare was the school’s daily ranking system.
The high school did not just test him; they weaponized his scores against his fellow inmates. Every morning began with a one hour exam. An hour or two later, the results were aggressively publicized, sorting the entire student body by how well they regurgitated the morning's trivia. It was a vicious, state sanctioned relegation league. If John fell into the bottom percentage of his class, he was physically exiled, swapped out with the top percentage from the tier below him every once in a while. He went to sleep knowing that a single bad midterm could strip him of his cellmates and downgrade his social standing overnight.
Under that kind of sustained blunt force trauma to the brain, his system finally gave out. He physically could not do it anymore. His sheer exhaustion metastasized into absolute rebellion, and he stopped playing a game designed to break him. Predictably, his college entrance exam percentiles plummeted from the top 10% down to the 20 somethings.
The consensus from the academic coroners and the surrounding adults was unanimous. They looked at the shattered remains of his academic record and officially declared him a John Doe, an unidentified, completely unremarkable casualty of the system. A loser who could not survive the grind. They tagged his toe with the labels "lazy" and "unfocused," zipped up the body bag, and moved on to the next batch of compliant specimens.
But here is the funny thing about that John Doe.
That was me.
And if you have read my previous post about the Cookie Cutter Machine, you already know how this ghost story actually ends. They looked at a kid who refused to spend his youth rotting in the dark and declared him clinically dead. But look at the complex cloud infrastructure and Gen AI systems I am engineering today, far removed from the slaughterhouse that tried to bury me, and ask yourself. Was I really a complete waste, or was I just the only one who realized the factory was a scam?
I usually avoid bringing up religion in public. I am a metalhead, so you can do the math on how I feel about blind obedience. But the older I get, the more this illusion of the perfect education feels like a fundamentalist cult. You start totally ignoring reality, letting the system drain your blood drop by drop or at least willingly sacrificing your kids' health, all because you have been brainwashed into thinking the only path to salvation is a "perfect" score to a "perfect" school to a "perfect" life. 🤡
